Goal Setting

The Eighty-Twenty Rule

What some people know that are successful in their goal quests is something called the 80/20 rule. For a lot of goal seekers, while they have stated their goals, have set out an action plan and have looked to eliminate some of their obstacles, they don't have within their process this golden rule of any success.

So, how can using this rule make a difference?

To those in the know, they also know that failures along the way can be one of the most valuable of tools in that these failures teach them what doesn't work. Within that lesson, though, there are valuable parts that have worked and it is to this end that the golden rule in my view was developed.

This same rule is used with outstanding success in sales or in your everyday life if it is your desire to actually accomplish what you want within the confines of time constraints.

The 80/20 rule basically is this:

It is the principle that 20 percent of something is always responsible for 80 percent of the results.

What this means to you is that 20% effective effort should result in producing 80% towards reaching your gaol. Or, as project managers know that 20 percent of the work (the first 10 percent and the last 10 percent) will account for 80 percent of your time and resources.

In this sense, your dedicated perseverance, due diligence in discarding unrelated or time wasting activities when applied directly and meaningfully to an action that propels you forward will result in moving you closer to the end.

Part of utilizing this rule is the mental toughness to dedicate your effort, time, resources, and spirit to actions that yield the most gain. Here is an example from an office manager's environment. If you need to accomplish a priority task, it doesn't get you any closer by doing other activities even if they can be done quickly. The essence is to only direct your mind, and energy to one task and one task alone thus focusing energy and concentration.

The same 80/20 rule applies to every one of us no matter what your occupation, age, or education, or what you are attempting to accomplish in life.

The smart play is this:
Don't hesitate to take action.
Use the 80/20 rule to move forward without wasting unnecessary energy.
Utilize every resource within your grasp including asking for help from others.
If you run into a road block or obstacle, back up and reload.
