Personal GoalsIf you are brand new to setting goals and want to learn how to do it, then you will be given the information and process that you can use over and over again throughout your life.If you have set goals in the past, then what you are about to read may be just a little tune up you need, or as a simple reminder of the process to be used. The first thing that anyone must do is to decide on where they want to end up, or what they want to accomplish. This does not mean that setting a goal now is the first and last time you will do it. Each of us can and probably will make new goals for the simple reason that the previous goal has already been accomplished or achieved. Goal setting is really a life long process; more of a continuous journey than one final resting spot. The reason for this is very simple. |

Here is the basic process to begin: 1. You have to decide what it is that you want to accomplis; what you need to do to change or make a life you want; or to decide on a career. At this time, some people might suggest that you make a wish list of what you want to do or to be, or to have. On the one hadn, this may get the juices flowing but this is not the sure-fire way to decide. Instead, you need to be very honest and open with what you decide because your decision must be something that is a burning desire, or a passion that you always think about and have only dreamed about in the past. Now, you can simply ask this question: what do I want to accomplish in the next two years, or, what do I need as a career to satisfy my desires? Write this choice or choices down on a piece of paper. 2. This question is one of the main thrusters, like an engine, to propel you forward to accomplish what you have decided in question one. The question is this: what specific actions do I need to take to accomplish my goals or goals? A simple question yet one of the most powerful to actually get you on the right track. In the answer, you MUST specify exact actions to take. For example, if you want to be a doctor, you need to specify what you would have to do. This means that you must first complete your high school education, then pre-med, and then med school. 3. This question asks you to set a specific time frame by which each of your action steps must be completed. If we take becoming a doctor as our example, this means you must set a specific date by which you will finish high school, a date for completeing your pre-med program, and a specific date to complete your medical training. All three questions must be completed in order for you or anyone to accomplish a specific goal. It is NOT a matter of just setting a goal. A goal written without the accompanying actions and time frames is no more than just a poor start with absolutely no finish. |
