Overwhelmed
By Byron Pulsifer
It's far easier to be overwhelmed than it is to see your course of action when faced with a large and demanding project. Far too many of us see the enormity of the task as if we have to accomplish it all in one fast swoop.
The same could be said of learning to walk, however, as little children, not only didn't we know it would be full of bumps, spills, and sometimes bruises but no one said or even suggested we had to learn to walk proficiently all at once.
Tasks, projects, or educational achievement, among just a few, if viewed as a final and completed destination become thoughts of insurmountable odds. If we view the task, however, as a series of small steps, than it isn't such a big deal.
I'm often reminded of this simple principle as a child being required by my mother to do the supper dishes each night. When I first saw the mound of dishes created by a family of six, I just hated the thought of this nightly chore. And, while my older sister always seemed to get the easier task of washing those dishes, I had to not only meticulously dry each one, but I had to wait until each was washed.
These doing dishes chores seemed monumental each night especially since I had other more fun things on my mind. After all, who wouldn't? But, no matter how hard I tried to avoid doing this chore, I always ended up at the sink. So, instead of looking at the mound of dirty dishes to be washed and passed to me, I simply looked at each dish on its own. In this simple way, all I had to do was to dry one dish. And, so it went. What was first a big pain for me never seemed as important after I figured out my simple little method.
Next time anything looks overwhelming, simply divide it into small,
bite size chunks and do only one chunk at a time. Setting your goals are no different, divide your goal into small action steps,
and do one action at a time and before you know it your goal will be achieved!
